A new, $50,000 prize aims to shine a light on English-language poets around the globe.
Organizers of the Montreal International Poetry Prize have enlisted former British poet laureate Andrew Motion to judge the inaugural edition of the Canadian-based competition.
Established through an anonymous donation, the Montreal Prize is designed to draw attention to poetry, with organizers "committed to encouraging the creation of original works of poetry, to building cross-national readership and to exploring the world's Englishes."
Founders of the Montreal Prize include poet Asa Boxer, businessman Peter Abramowicz and former banker and writer Len Epp.
Entries of unpublished poems — no longer than 40 lines and written in any English dialect — will be accepted as "early" entries until April 22. The final deadline is July 8.
Then, a 10-person editorial board — including Irish poet Sinead Morrissey, Canadian poets Stephanie Bolster and Michael Harris, as well as peers from Africa, Europe, Asia and the Caribbean — will filter through the submissions to create a long list of candidates.
Véhicule Press will publish two collections from the submissions: an e-book collection featuring the long-listed candidates and another global anthology (to be published in print and e-book) focussing on the finalists.
The board will draw up a short list of 50 poems, with Motion to choose the eventual winner in December.

RBC Seeks Emerging Artists for 13th Annual RBC Canadian Painting Competition
Posted by doverall on 2/14/11 • Categorized as Corporate Member News
RBC, with the support of the Canadian Art Foundation, today announced its call for entries for the 2011 RBC Canadian Painting Competition. With a total of $55,000 in prize money, it is the largest competition of its kind in Canada.
Entries must be submitted by May 11, 2011 and winners will be announced in Edmonton on September 27, 2011, with the national winner receiving $25,000 and two honourable mentions each receiving $15,000. Semi-finalists in the competition will see their work displayed at prominent art galleries across the country and featured in Canadian Art magazine.
“The RBC Canadian Painting Competition helps demonstrate the talent and diversity of emerging Canadian artists and recognizes them on a national level,” said Ann Webb, Executive Director, Canadian Art Foundation. “The Canadian art community looks forward to this competition each year as it is an opportunity to nurture and support up-and-coming artists and highlight their contributions to our nation’s culture.”
RBC works closely with the Canadian Art Foundation to recognize the skill and talent of Canada’s emerging artists and provide them with a professional competition that offers national exposure. The Canadian Art Foundation oversees the adjudication process, allowing the works to be judged by a select panel of distinguished members of the visual arts community.
Details and rules of the competition may be found at www.rbc.com/paintingcompetition. The submitted works will be short-listed to 15 semi-finalists by independent panels of regional judges. All regional jurors come together late September to determine one national winner and two honourable mentions. On September 27, the 2011 winner and honourable mentions will be announced and all 15 paintings will be on exhibit at the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton. All finalists will be featured at www.rbc.com/paintingcompetition.
About the RBC Canadian Painting Competition
Established in 1999, the RBC Canadian Painting Competition is a tribute to Canada’s artistic talent. The goal of the competition is to support and nurture Canadian visual artists early in their career by providing them with a forum to display their artistic talent to the country and hopefully open doors to future opportunity. An investment in Canadian culture and the visual arts community, the competition will award one national prize of $25,000 and two honourable mentions will receive prizes of $15,000 each. Along with past winners, the winning paintings of 2011 will become part of RBC’s Canadian art collection comprised of more than 4,000 works of distinguished art collected over the past hundred years. Various paintings from the RBC collection have been exhibited in museums, enabling more Canadians to enjoy these wonderful works.

DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 28, 2011 TO 11:59 PM
So You Want to Be an Artist is a contest about art and you. Make an artwork about something you care about and post it here. Then it’s up to your friends, family and other people to vote on the entries. The 12 artworks with the most votes will be displayed at the National Gallery of Canada, where our uber-cool judges will pick the best ones. This is your chance to get your art out into the world. It doesn’t matter if you’re thinking about art school or have never picked up a paintbrush in your life – show us what you’ve got.
Starting at 12:00 a.m. Eastern Time (ET) on January 10, 2011, and continuing until 11:59 p.m. on February 28, 2011 (the “Submission Phase”), contestants can visit the Contest website at www.makeart.gallery.ca to enter and submit a digital image of an original artwork in any media (an “Artwork”). No entries will be accepted after 11:59 p.m. ET February 28, 2011.
For a contest like this, we obviously have to have a few rules. If you are under the age of majority in your province or territory, read through these rules with your parent or legal guardian.
Basically you have to be between 16 and 19 years of age (as of May 31, 2011). Your artwork has to be original – you can’t cut and paste other people’s images or logos and call them your own – and it can be no larger than 30 x 40 cm and 2-dimensional so we can hang it on our wall. The themes and images should be appropriate (no extreme violence, obscene imagery, hateful or racially objectionable themes) and can be made in any medium. The Gallery will decline works that don’t comply with these rules. The voting period will open on March 1, 2011 and close on March 31, 2011. People will be able to vote for as many artworks as they want, but they can only vote once per artwork – which means you’ll want to get as many people as possible to vote for yours! The 12 artworks with the most votes will be the finalists. If you’re one of the finalists, you’ll have to sign a waiver and the Gallery will pay for you to send your artwork to be put on display and be seen by our uber-cool judges. The judges will decide who gets 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize at the end of May 2011. We’ll be announcing the winners early in June 2011.
