Jorge Miguel Flamenco Ensemble
Thursday Janurary 20, 2011
Carman Collegiate Theatre
Jorge Miguel's style of Flamenco is full contact, hard-core. This is the real thing. Alegrias, Bulerias, Tangos and Sevillanas, the traditional songs and dances passed down through the generations after hundresd of years of development and growth. The arpeggios, rasgueados, and alzapua of the Flamenco guitar, the escobillas, zapateado and llamadas of the Flamenco song, and the palmas, castanets and percussion driving the complex compound rhythms. This is true Flamenco, proud, complex, ageless

Bardasser: A French-Canadian verb derived from bardas. Bardasser generally means to make a bardas, that is, "To make a ruckus". And that is most definitely the case with La Bardasse, a group of fun-loving troubadours that will have audiences up dancing, stomping their feet or at the very least, wriggling their toes to the rhythm! La Bardasse originates from diverse and distant regions of Canada, but come together in their wish to represent, promote and celebrate French-Canadian history, music and culture.

Manitoba Theatre Centre's touring group returns to Carman and will be performing playwright Robert Chafe's "Tempting Providence". This play is quickly becoming an international success story of courage, and strength - told with simple elegance.
British-trained nurse & midwife Myra Bennett arrived in Newfoundland from her native London, England in 1921 after hearing of the desperate need for her work in rural communities. She was one of the first group of outport nurses who became a legend for performing a variety of medical tasks, from delivering babies to setting bones to extracting teeth. All this she did in all kinds of weather while traveling by foot, horse, dogsled, boat along the 320-kilometer rugged Northern Peninsula. She was known throughout Newfoundland and Labrador as ”Florence Nightingale of the North.Tempting Providence is a wonderful, heart-felt portrayal of Nurse Bennett who has been honored many times over by the Governments of Canada and Britain. This little play speaks to an entire nation built by people such as Nurse Bennett, who by her own admission, could have easily ended up in Manitoba as Newfoundland - and who, no doubt, would have enjoyed a very similar life here. |

Summer Bear Dance Troupe Friday, September 18, 2009
Carman Collegiate Theatre, 7:30 PM
What a wonderful dance troupe! We had good attendance and a wonderful evening learning about and watching Aboriginal Dance.
Formed under the direction of Barbara Nepinak, there are Ojibway, Cree, Assiniboine and Sioux tribes represented in the Troupe, ranging in age from four and up. They perform dances such as the Grass Dance, the Traditional, the Fancy Feather and Shawl Dance, the Hoop Dance and the Jingle Dress.
The name of the group originated from the original Ojibway name of Nepinak - "Neebin-ni-maqua" meaning SummerBear. The Summer Bear Dance Troupe focuses on educating and sharing aspects of the Aboriginal Community, acknowledging the different regions where the dances originated.
The Dance Troupe has traveled internationally to places such as Australia, Brazil, United States, Sweden, and most recently Taiwan. They have performed at many events including Folklorama, the 1999 Pan Am Games and yearly at The Forks annual Solstice Celebrations.
